The school offers a program dedicated to teaching a defined core of knowledge and skills in reading, math, and science.
Educational excellence is the foundation of the Bettendorf Community School District. Working in partnership with the family and community, we will instill and nurture in all students the knowledge, skills, creativity, and confidence to pursue their dreams and to succeed in a global society.
Grant Wood History
Grant Wood School was opened in 1960 as a seven-classroom school with an office suite, boys and girls locker, shower and bathrooms. The school is named after Grant Wood, the Iowa artist known for his Regionalism style of art and his most popular oil painting, American Gothic, depicting the farmer and his daughter in front of an American farmhouse. Today students at Grant Wood Elementary and other schools in the Bettendorf School District study the artistic style of Grant Wood by rendering in various mediums their own versions of American Gothic in parody.
In February 1997, Bettendorf approved a bond referendum which added an elevator, 3 new classrooms, a computer lab, and new media center. In 2000-2001, Grant Wood was completely renovated, classrooms and restrooms were updated. Our playground has new equipment furnished through a grant and our baseball diamond has been rebuilt thanks to funding from the Grant Wood PTA.
In 2018, a new 62,500 SF school was built on the Grant Wood campus bringing more space, more light, more community use, and more flexible learning opportunities. The design of the new elementary school provides much-needed improvements in learning areas for all students. Classrooms are significantly larger, breakout areas are located throughout the building, and large areas have been designed for small group work as well as adult learning. The spine of the building features a 21st-century conference area designed as a multipurpose space. The gym, nearly twice as large as the old one, not only expands the PE program, but also welcomes community recreation programs.
